Who was Samantha Young before becoming the famous writer?

Chi era Samantha Young prima di diventare la famosa scrittrice?

I was a university history graduate, struggling to find a job related to my degree. Instead I worked as an administrator for Central Scotland Police until they had to let me go due to budget cuts. With no job, but two and a half books written, I decided to take a real shot at a writing career.

Ero una laureate in storia, che si struggeva per trovare un lavoro correlato ai suoi studi. Invece, lavoravo come amministratrice per la centrale di polizia scozzese, finchè non mi hanno licenziata per dei tagli del budget. Senza lavoro, ma con due libri e mezzo scritti, ho deciso di fare un vero tentativo nella carriera letteraria.

Is your name the real one or is it a pseudonym?

If you could live in a TV show, what would it be and why?

Outlander. Because I’d feel right at home on it, being Scottish, and loving history. Also… Jamie.

Who is your man crush?

If you could move in another Country what would it be? And in which city of that Country would you like to live?

Se potessi trasferirti in un altro Paese, quale sarebbe? E in quale città di quel Paese ti piacerebbe vivere?

I’d move to Boston, Massachusetts in the US in a heartbeat. I’ve visited there twice and both times I felt as if I’d already lived another life there, I felt so at home.

Mi trasferirei a Boston, Massachusetts negli Stati Uniti, in un attimo. Sono andata due volte e entrambe mi sono sentita come se già vivessi un’altra vita lì, mi sono sentita così a casa.

Do you have an idol? What would you say to him/her if you could?

Hai un idolo? Cosa gli/le diresti, se potessi?

I adore both Angela Carter and Patrick Ness’s writing. If Carter was still alive I’d love to sit down to dinner with both of them. I don’t have anything specific I would say to either of them; I’d just love to have a conversation with them. I have no doubt I’d find them fascinating.

Adoro sia la scrittura di Angela Carter che quella di Patrick Ness. Se Carter fosse ancora viva, mi piacerebbe sedere a cena con entrambi. Non ho niente di specifico da dirgli, mi piacerebbe solo farci conversazione. Non ho dubbio che li troverei affascinanti.

If you had the opportunity to interview someone, who would he/she be?

What’s your biggest source of inspiration?

Qual è la tua più grande fonte di ispirazione?

Music, books, movies and the people around me are my biggest sources of inspiration

Musica, libri, film, e le persone intorno a me sono la mia più grande fonte di ispirazione.

How much time do you need to write a book?

Quanto tempo ti serve per scrivere un libro?

Between 3 – 5 months

Do you listen to music while you are writing? What type?

Ascolti la musica mentre scrivi? Che tipo?

Definitely. I have a very eclectic taste in music but I love bands that I call ‘storyteller bands’. There lyrics and music really inspire my writing.

Sicuramente. Ho gusti molto eclettici in fatto di musica, ma amo le band che chiamo “band cantastorie”. I loro testi e la loro musica ispirano la mia scrittura.

If you could make a movie based on one of your stories, what would you choose?

Se potessi basare un film su una delle tue storie, quale sceglieresti?

Hero o The Impossible Vastness of Us.

As we can see, in your books there is always a tragic component; at least in the background. Is there a specific reason or is just the common thread that links your stories?

Come possiamo vedere, nei tuoi libri c’è sempre una componente tragica; almeno nel background. C’è una ragione specifica o è solo un filo conduttore che lega le tue storie?

I suppose it’s because I know and understand tragedy personally and how it shapes you as you grow older. I love to write from experience because it gives my words more authenticity. But the specific reason is my focus as a writer. My main focus in my writing is to strive for great character development and it is often the biggest moments in our lives (and often, sadly, the most tragic) that change us and pushes us to grow. Characters with that range are just more interesting to write about.

Credo sia perchè conosco e capisco la tragedia persomalmente e come ti cambia mentre cresci. Adoro scrivere basandomi sull’esperienza perchè dà alle mie parole più autenticità; ma la ragione specifica è il mio obbiettivo come scrittrice. Il mio obiettivo principale nella scrittura è lottare per l’evoluzione di un grande personaggio ed è sempre il più importante momento nella nostra vita (e spesso, tristemente, il più tragico) che ci cambia e ci spinge a crescere. I personaggi di questo tipo sono semplicemente I più interessanti di cui scrivere.

So, let’s talk about the very long “On Dublin Street” series, which is the first that arrived in Italy. Where are Braden and Joss coming from? Are they inspired by someone from your past?

Allora, parliamo della lunghissima serie “On Dublin Street”, che è la prima ad essere arrivata in Italia. Da dove arrivano Braden e Joss? Sono ispirati da qualcuno del tuo passato?

Joss is an exaggerated version of myself, while Braden is an exaggerated version of most of the Scotsmen I’ve grown up around.

Joss è una versione eccessiva di me stessa, mentre Braden è una versione eccessiva della maggior parte degli scozzesi fra cui sono cresciuta.

Why do you decided to expand the series to all the characters you have written about?

Perchè hai deciso di espandere la serie a tutti I personaggi di cui hai parlato?

Because of the readers. I intended On Dublin Street to be a standalone but the readers loved that world so much that I decided to give them more.

Per I lettori. il mio intento era che On Dublin Street (Sei bellissima stasera) fosse un autoconclusivo, ma I lettori hanno amato quel mondo così tanto che ho deciso di dargliene di più.

Which book has been the most difficult to write in this series?

Che libro è stato il più difficile da scrivere in questa serie?

On Dublin Street was probably the most difficult because it was so personal but also because it was my first contemporary romance. I was really just finding my feet in the genre with this book.

On Dublin Street (Sei bellissima stasera) è stato probabilmente il più difficile perchè era molto personale, ma anche il mio primo contemporary romance. Mi stavo giusto adattando al genere con questo libro.

Another story of yours we have had the opportunity to read is the first chapter of “Into the Deep”. How would you describe the intense relationship between Jake and Charley?

Un’altra storia delle tue che abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di leggere è il primo capitolo di “Into the Deep” (Tra due cuori). Come descriveresti l’intensa relazione fra Jake e Charley?

It’s a very passionate relationship filled with regrets, mistakes and a lot of love. Their relationship begins when they’re still very, very young and it falls apart because they are still growing as people. However, it the deep connection and love that keeps drawing them back together when they are older.

È una appassionantissima relazione piena di rimorsi, sbagli e molto amore. La loro relazione inizia quando sono ancora molto, molto giovani e si spezza perchè stanno ancora crescendo come persone. Comunque, è la profonda connessione e l’amore che li riporta insieme quando sono più grandi.

For some reasons, none of your series has been published in full here in Italy. What should we expect from the epilogue of Jake and Charley’s story?

Per qualche motivo, nessuna delle tue serie è stata pubblicata per intero in Italia. Cosa dovremmo aspettarci dall’epilogo della storia di Jake e Charley?

I’d say a lot of angst and passion. Their story is a bit of a tear-jerker as it flips back and forth between the past and present. I’ve been told by readers that this is one of my most addictive reads.

Direi un sacco di angoscia e passione. La loro storia è un po’ strappalacrime siccome cambia in continuazione dal passato al presente. I lettori mi hanno detto che è una delle mie letture più coinvolgenti.

Then, this September we have read “Hero”. What an amazing book! Why do you entitled it “Hero”? What does “Hero” mean to you?

Poi, questo settembre, abbiamo letto “Hero”. Che libro fantastico! Perchè lo hai intitolato “Hero”? cosa vuol dire “Eroe” per te?

I titled it HERO because as lovely as it is to find someone we can think of as our hero (someone to be there to support us when we need them and to pick us up when we fall down), it is even more amazing to be your own hero. That’s really what the book is about. It’s not just about Alexa being Caine’s heroine and Caine being her hero. It’s about the two of them putting their past behind them, growing strong from it, and standing tall to be their own hero.

L'ho intitolato HERO perché, così come è bello trovare qualcosa a cui possiamo pensare come il nostro eroe (qualcuno che è lì per supportarci quando abbiamo bisogno di lui e per tirarci su quando cadiamo), è ancora più fantastico essere il proprio eroe. Questo è ciò su cui è basato realmente il libro. Non è solo l’essere Alexa l’eroina di Caine e Caine il suo. Tratta di loro due che si lasciano il passato alle spalle, traendo forza da quello e innalzandosi ad essere I propri eroi.

Would you describe “Hero” as a mystery/ thriller romance?

Descriveresti Hero come un giallo/thriller romance?

I would describe it as a contemporary romance with a touch of suspense.

Lo descriverei come un contemporary romance con un tocco di suspense.

Do you ever re-read your books? If so, what are you thinking while you are reading your words?

Rileggi mai I tuoi libri? Se sì, cosa pensi mentre leggi le tue parole?

I do re-read my work to freshen my memory as I move onto newer works. We’re our own worst critics, so although sometimes I’m proud of what I’ve written, sometimes I think to myself, I could have described that better or this sentence could be better etc.

Rileggo I miei libri per rinfrescarmi la memoria quando inizio lavori nuovi. Siamo I nostri peggiori critici, quindi, sebbene a volte io sia orgogliosa di quello che ho scritto, a volte penso che avrei potuto scrivere meglio o che una certa frase potrebbe essere meglio etc.

Do you reflect yourself more in one of your girls? If so, which one?

Ti rispecchi in una delle tue ragazze in particolare? Se sì, in quale?

I’d say I’m a mix between Joss from On Dublin Street and Olivia from Before Jamaica Lane.

Direi che sono un misto di Joss (Sei bellissima stasera) e Olivia (E adesso ci sei tu).

If you could go on a date with one of your male characters, who would he be?

Se potessi andare ad un appuntamento con uno dei tuoi protagonisti maschili, chi sarebbe?

It would probably be with Nate Sawyer from Before Jamaica Lane or Logan MacLeod from Moonlight On Nightingale Way.

Probabilmente sarebbe Nate Sawyer da “E adesso ci sei tu” o Logan MacLeod da “Moonlight on Nightingale Way” (inedito in Italia).

As I said before, in Italy we are still waiting for some books of the “On Dublin street” series and one from the “Into the deep” series. Are those coming soon? And above all, are there some from other series coming?

Come dicevo prima, in Italia stiamo ancora aspettando alcuni libri della serie “On Dublin Street” e uno dalla serie “Fra due cuori”. Arriveranno presto? E soprattutto, ci sono altre serie in arrivo?

I’d like to hope they’re coming soon but I cannot say for definite. My books are published in thirty countries and unfortunately it’s very difficult to keep up to date with all the release dates etc from the different publishers.

Mi piacerebbe sperare che stiano arrivando, ma non posso dirlo in maniera certa. I miei libri sono pubblicati in trenta paesi e, sfortunatamente, è difficile tenere conto di tutte le date etc dei vari editori.

Penny Reid or LH Cosway, mostly because they are so witty and hilarious and I would love to see what their writing process is like. Or Mia Sheridan. She writes the most beautiful romances.

Penny Reid o LH Cosway, più che altro perché sono molto brillanti e divertenti e mi piacerebbe vedere com’è il loro processo di scrittura. O Mia Sheridan. Scrive i romance più belli.

Is there an advice you would give to an emergent author?

C’è un consiglio che daresti a uno scrittore emergente?

Write, write and write some more. Invite critique, and always use a good editor! We can’t be our own editors. There’s no way to grow as a writer by doing that.

Scrivi, scrivi, scrivi ancora di più. Accogli la critica e usa un buon editore! Non possiamo essere i nostri editori, non si può crescere come scrittori altrimenti.

Is there something you want to say to your Italian readers?

C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai tuoi lettori italiani?
